Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to expedite the privatization process of electricity distribution companies (DISCOs), reiterating that privatizing loss-making state-owned enterprises remains a top government priority. Chairing a review meeting on DISCO privatization, the prime minister stressed that the entire process must be completed in a transparent manner.
Regulatory framework and transparency
He also directed officials to establish a strong regulatory framework after privatization to ensure efficient operations and consumer protection. Officials briefed the meeting on progress, stating that the first phase will include the privatization of Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO), Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO), and Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO).
Investor roadshows and international outreach
It was further informed that expressions of interest for these companies have already been published in national and international newspapers, while the Cabinet Committee on Privatization has approved the transaction structure. The meeting was told that investor roadshows are being organized this month, including international outreach targeting investors from Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and China.
The session was attended by senior federal ministers, including the deputy prime minister, finance minister, power minister, and other relevant officials.
