DC Studios' upcoming Supergirl film is set to deliver a shorter cinematic experience than many recent superhero releases. Ahead of the movie's June 26 release, the Irish Film Classification Office confirmed that Supergirl has a running time of approximately 108 minutes. The length places the film among the shortest feature films in DC history and makes it noticeably shorter than James Gunn's Superman, which runs for 129 minutes.
Cast and Crew
The new film stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor El, reprising the character following her brief introduction in 2025's Superman. Directed by Craig Gillespie, whose previous credits include I, Tonya and Cruella, the adventure follows Kara as she travels across the galaxy accompanied by Krypto while pursuing a personal mission of revenge.
Comparison to Other DC Films
With its 108-minute runtime, Supergirl narrowly surpasses 2020's Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, which ran for 109 minutes and previously ranked among the shortest entries connected to the modern DC era.
Supporting Cast
The film features a strong supporting cast that includes Jason Momoa, Emily Beecham, and David Corenswet, who will appear once again as Superman. Earlier this year, Alcock teased Corenswet's cameo, revealing that their sequence was filmed in Kryptonian and under extremely cold conditions.
Emotional Themes
The actress has also spoken about the emotional themes at the centre of the story. Alcock described Kara as a flawed hero and said the character embraces imperfections rather than striving for unattainable perfection. "I think that we're thrusted upon this narrative, especially women, that you have to be perfect in every aspect of your life," Alcock previously explained. She added that Kara's journey demonstrates that personal growth can come despite imperfections.
DC Universe Context
Supergirl marks the second film in the rebooted DC Universe overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran. The wider first chapter, titled Gods and Monsters, also includes projects such as Clayface, Man of Tomorrow, and Swamp Thing. Expectations are high following the successful launch of the new DC Universe with Superman. The shorter runtime could prove appealing to audiences looking for a streamlined superhero adventure rather than an extended epic.
