Egypt has collected approximately 729,344 metric tons of locally grown wheat since the start of its domestic procurement season two weeks ago, according to official data released on Thursday. This cumulative intake from local farmers is 13 percent higher than the same period in 2025 but remains 26.9 percent below the levels recorded in 2024.
Procurement Details
By the same date in 2025, Egypt had collected 644,814 tons of wheat, while in 2024 the figure stood at 998,796 tons. The government purchases local wheat at premium prices to reduce reliance on imports and maintain the supply of subsidized bread, a staple for over 69 million Egyptians.
Annual Target and Season
The country aims to collect 5 million tons of local wheat this year. The harvest season runs from April 15 through August 15, providing a window for ongoing procurement efforts.
