The Saudi-backed Masam Project for Landmine Clearance in Yemen has successfully destroyed 4,076 landmines and other war remnants in the Dofas area of Abyan governorate. The operation was conducted on Thursday by the project’s First Special Tasks Team as part of ongoing efforts to clear Yemeni territory of mines, improvised explosive devices, and other hazards.
Details of the Operation
The destroyed items included a wide range of explosive ordnance: 219 shells, 3,570 rounds of ammunition, 255 fuses, 12 anti-personnel mines, five anti-tank mines, 11 hand grenades, three rockets, and one improvised explosive device. This comprehensive clearance operation underscores the project’s commitment to mitigating the dangers posed by explosive remnants of war.
Team Commander's Statement
In a statement, team commander Munther Qassem highlighted that the unit responds around the clock to reports from residents and local authorities in Aden, Abyan, and Lahj. He noted that the team recently responded to a report from Lahj governorate about an explosive device, moving immediately to the site to dismantle it and secure the area.
