Italian authorities evacuated approximately 3,500 people on Friday as they struggled to contain a wildfire that has been raging for more than 24 hours in the famed Tuscany region. The fire has consumed over 800 hectares (nearly 2,000 acres) in the mountains between the historic cities of Lucca and Pisa.
Evacuations and Response
The municipality of San Giuliano Terme stated that around 3,500 people were affected by the blaze. Strong winds pushed the flames downhill toward the village of Asciano, prompting urgent evacuation measures. Three Canadair water-dumping planes and a helicopter were deployed to douse the wildfire from the air, while 19 fire brigade vehicles worked on the ground. Army and police personnel assisted with the evacuation process.
Temporary Shelters
Two gyms in the area were equipped to accommodate evacuees, housing around 107 people. Authorities continued to monitor the situation closely as the fire threatened more communities.
Wildfire Season Starting Earlier
Wildfires are common in Italy, typically occurring during the summer months. However, due to rising temperatures, the wildfire season has been starting earlier in recent years. This incident highlights the growing challenges posed by climate change and the need for enhanced preparedness.
The firefighting efforts involved coordination between multiple agencies, including the Italian Corps of Firefighters (Vigili del Fuoco), the army, and local police. The region remains on high alert as crews work to fully extinguish the flames and prevent further damage.
