Live Portrait Painting Class Debuts at Abbottabad Arts Academy

Internationally acclaimed artist Nasir Shehzad conducted the first-ever live portrait painting class at the Abbottabad Academy of Performing Arts (APA), offering aspiring and professional artists a unique opportunity to learn directly from one of Pakistan's leading visual artists.

Live Demonstration and Interactive Learning

The session brought together students, emerging artists and experienced painters, who observed the complete process of portrait creation in a live educational setting. Participants termed the workshop a valuable initiative for promoting fine arts in Abbottabad and strengthening the region's creative culture.

Techniques and Guidance

During the interactive class, Shehzad demonstrated key techniques of portrait painting, focusing on facial proportions, composition, observation, light and shadow, colour relationships, and the subtle elements that convey personality and emotion. Participants also engaged with the artist through a question-and-answer session and received practical guidance on professional artistic practice.

Community Appreciation

Attendees appreciated the academy for organising such an event, noting that opportunities to learn from distinguished artists are rare in the region. They said regular interaction with accomplished professionals can help nurture emerging talent and foster stronger connections within the artistic community.

About the Artist

Shehzad is regarded as one of Pakistan's foremost contemporary artists, particularly for his work in landscape and portrait painting. The son of renowned artist Abdul Ghaffar, he carries forward a rich artistic legacy passed down by his father. His work spans charcoal, watercolour, acrylic and oil painting. While his landscapes capture the beauty and serenity of nature, his portraits seek to reveal the deeper dimensions of human character. His conceptual works combine visual aesthetics with philosophical themes, encouraging thoughtful reflection.

Academy's Vision

Speaking on the occasion, APA Executive Director Safdar Hussain said the academy was recently established through a joint initiative of ACP News and Hazara Abaseen Arts Council to provide a vibrant platform for artists.
