DEO Lower Kohistan Inaugurates Spring Tree Plantation Campaign to Address Climate Challenges
In a significant move to promote environmental sustainability, the District Education Officer (DEO) for Lower Kohistan, Muzaffar Ali Khan, officially launched the Spring Tree Plantation Campaign on Wednesday. The inauguration ceremony took place on the lawn of his office, where Mr Khan planted a sapling to symbolize the start of the initiative, calling on educational institutions across the district to take a proactive role in mitigating the impacts of climate change.
Officials and Staff Gather to Support Green Initiative
The event was attended by Deputy District Education Officer Aurangzeb Khalil, along with other key officials, staff members, and teachers from various schools. Following the tree-planting, a brief gathering was held where participants discussed strategies to enhance green cover in the region. Mr Khan addressed the assembly, highlighting the critical importance of trees in maintaining ecological balance and safeguarding public health.
Muzaffar Ali Khan emphasized that trees are a "priceless gift of nature," essential for purifying the air and protecting against environmental degradation. He pointed out that with escalating global issues such as environmental pollution, global warming, and rising temperatures, extensive tree plantation serves as one of the most effective and sustainable solutions. "The effects of climate change are becoming increasingly visible, with unseasonal rainfall, glacial melt, floods, and droughts posing serious threats to our region," he warned.
Religious and Moral Imperatives for Environmental Protection
In his speech, Mr Khan referenced a verse from the Holy Qur'an, "And the stars and the trees prostrate" (Surah Ar-Rahman 55:6), to underscore the significance of trees in Islam. He urged all participants to view environmental protection not only as a national duty but also as a religious and moral obligation. "Planting trees is not merely a symbolic campaign but a collective responsibility to safeguard the future of coming generations," he added, reinforcing the need for active community involvement.
Other speakers at the event echoed this sentiment, describing tree plantation as a form of Sadaqah Jariyah, or continuous charity, which provides enduring benefits to society. They noted that amid rising temperatures and increasingly severe natural disasters, expanding green cover has become an urgent necessity to combat climate-related challenges.
Directives Issued for Schools to Maximize Plantation Efforts
At the conclusion of the ceremony, the DEO issued formal directives to all public and private educational institutions in Lower Kohistan to implement the Spring Plantation Campaign effectively. Schools have been instructed to:
- Maximize plantation efforts by planting saplings within school premises and in surrounding areas.
- Ensure regular upkeep and maintenance of the planted saplings to guarantee long-term environmental benefits.
- Submit periodic progress reports to the district education office to monitor and evaluate the campaign's impact.
This initiative aims to foster a culture of environmental stewardship among students and teachers, encouraging them to actively participate in the drive. By integrating tree plantation into educational activities, the campaign seeks to create a greener, healthier future for the district and beyond.
