Princess Diaries 3 Gains Momentum as Producer Confirms Progress
The original 'The Princess Diaries' arrived in 2001 and became an instant favourite, turning Anne Hathaway into a household name while introducing viewers to the awkward San Francisco teenager who unexpectedly discovers she is heir to a European kingdom. Its 2004 sequel, 'The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement', expanded Mia's royal journey and left audiences wondering what might come next. For years, that question remained unanswered as rumours surfaced periodically, cast members expressed interest, and fans continued to revisit the films, which steadily evolved into modern family classics.
Now, however, the strongest signs yet suggest that a third instalment is moving closer to reality. Producer Debra Martin Chase recently revealed that substantial groundwork has already been completed and said the creative team remains determined to bring the project to the screen. While production had initially been hoped for this year, the film is still moving forward, according to Chase, who acknowledged the continued enthusiasm surrounding the franchise.
Why Fans Are Excited
The prospect of a third film has generated excitement not only because of nostalgia but because audiences are eager to see how Mia's story has evolved. When viewers last saw her, she had embraced her destiny and taken her place as ruler of Genovia. More than 20 years later, many fans are curious about what life looks like for a queen rather than a princess.
Anne Hathaway, whose career has since included acclaimed performances in films ranging from 'The Devil Wears Prada' and 'Interstellar' to numerous award-winning projects, has repeatedly spoken warmly about the franchise that launched her career. She has described the original film as life-changing and has acknowledged the extraordinary level of anticipation surrounding a third chapter.
Overcoming Delays
Recent reports suggest that scheduling conflicts, including Hathaway's involvement in 'The Devil Wears Prada 2', contributed to delays. With those commitments now largely behind her, attention appears to be shifting back toward Genovia. The project gained additional momentum when Disney selected filmmaker Adele Lim to direct the sequel. Lim, best known for 'Joy Ride', has indicated that longtime fans can expect familiar faces and a broader look at Genovia than previous films were able to provide. Plans reportedly include filming in Europe to showcase the fictional kingdom on a larger scale.
Several former cast members have also expressed enthusiasm about returning. Actors including Chris Pine, Robert Schwartzman and John Rhys-Davies have publicly indicated they would welcome the opportunity to revisit their characters if called upon.
What Remains Uncertain
Despite the encouraging updates, important details remain unresolved. The film has yet to receive a final green light, and plot specifics have not been revealed. Even so, after years of uncertainty, the latest developments suggest that the gates of Genovia may finally be preparing to reopen.
