Gracie Abrams has revealed she never envisioned a career in acting, despite now preparing for her first film role after seven years as a singer-songwriter. The 26-year-old artist will star in Please, a new movie directed by Halina Reijn, marking her transition to the screen.
From Music to Movies: Abrams on Her Unexpected Path
In a recent interview with Vogue, Abrams explained that acting was never part of her plan. “This wasn’t something I imagined for myself, but every time I read the script it stimulates something in me,” she told the magazine. The singer first met Reijn about three years ago, when the director was seeking songwriters for her film Babygirl.
Reijn recalled being immediately drawn to Abrams. “I totally forgot it was a business meeting… I wanted to be her friend,” the director told Vogue. When Reijn later began writing Please, she “immediately” thought of Abrams for the lead role. The singer impressed during auditions, according to Reijn, because she deeply understood the character and connected strongly with the story.
What to Expect From 'Please'
Plot details for Please remain under wraps, but Reijn described it as a romantic film exploring experiences many women can relate to. The cast also includes Tom Burke, David Jonsson, and Connor Storrie. To prepare for her role, Abrams has been reading plays, writing songs inspired by her character, and creating playlists. She said the process has led her to explore dark and emotional ideas.
Hollywood Ties and Personal Life
Although acting is new for Abrams, she comes from a family deeply rooted in Hollywood. Her father is filmmaker J. J. Abrams, and her mother is producer Katie McGrath. Abrams is also in a relationship with actor Paul Mescal.
