Focus Features' horror-romance film Obsession has become the studio's highest-grossing movie of all time, surpassing the 2019 film Downton Abbey. According to Deadline, the film has reached $224.7 million at the worldwide box office, exceeding industry expectations.
Record-Breaking Performance
Directed by filmmaker and YouTube creator Curry Barker in his feature directorial debut, Obsession was produced on a modest budget of $750,000. Focus Features acquired the film for over $15 million after its screening in the Midnight section of the Toronto International Film Festival.
The film's worldwide earnings now stand at $224.7 million, including $152.1 million from North America and $72.6 million from international markets. This milestone sees Obsession overtake Downton Abbey, which previously held the studio record with a worldwide gross of $194.6 million.
Domestic and International Success
Obsession had already become Focus Features' highest-grossing domestic release on May 31 before extending its lead with another strong weekend at cinemas. During its fourth weekend, the film generated $25.6 million in North America, setting a new benchmark for a horror title's fourth weekend performance. This figure surpassed The Blair Witch Project, which earned $24.3 million in its fourth weekend in 1999.
Internationally, the film added $17.7 million during its fourth overseas frame. The strongest overseas markets include the United Kingdom and Ireland, where it has earned $13.8 million, while India has contributed $4.4 million, making it one of the country's strongest-performing Hollywood horror releases.
Audience Appeal
Strong word-of-mouth and broad audience appeal have helped turn Obsession into one of 2026's most notable box office success stories. The film's unique blend of horror and romance has resonated with viewers worldwide, driving its remarkable performance.
