Rosamund Pike experienced another interruption during a performance of Inter Alia after a mobile phone alarm rang out from the front row of Wyndham’s Theatre in London. According to reports from The Guardian, the disruption occurred during the Saturday matinee performance of Suzie Miller’s acclaimed play.
The ringing continued for more than a minute before the audience member eventually located the phone inside a handbag and silenced it. Despite the prolonged disturbance, Pike continued with the performance and made no public remarks after the show. Witnesses said the actress briefly glared towards the audience member responsible before carrying on with the scene.
Previous Incident
The incident came only weeks after Pike made headlines for directly addressing another theatre-goer during a previous performance of Inter Alia. According to The Times, the actress confronted an audience member who had been texting during the show, telling them they had broken the connection between the performers and the audience.
The Play and Its Success
Pike currently stars as a crown court judge in the production, a role that earned her an Olivier Award. The play, written by Prima Facie creator Suzie Miller, has received strong reviews during its West End run.
One audience member sitting close to the front told reporters that they initially believed the sound was part of the production’s soundtrack because it continued for so long. However, the noise quickly became distracting because it occurred during a quieter moment in the play.
Common Issue at Theatres
Another member of staff at the theatre acknowledged that mobile phone disruptions remain a common issue. According to the employee, at least one audience member uses a device during almost every performance, making it difficult for staff to intervene without causing even more disruption.
Pike’s recent experiences reflect wider frustrations among performers regarding audience etiquette in theatres. Last month, Lesley Manville criticised audience members who record curtain calls, saying actors should not have phones pointed at them while acknowledging applause. Earlier this year, Cynthia Erivo halted a performance of Dracula after spotting someone filming in the audience. Andrew Scott also famously interrupted his performance of Hamlet in 2017 after noticing an audience member using a laptop to send emails during the production.
Renewed Discussion on Theatre Etiquette
The growing number of incidents has sparked renewed discussion about theatre etiquette and the impact of mobile devices on live performances. Although Pike remained silent following the latest disruption, witnesses noted that she maintained her professionalism throughout the performance and completed the show without further interruption. The episode also highlighted the unusual coincidence that both recent disturbances involving Pike originated from audience members seated close to the front of the theatre.
