Beyoncé surprised fans on July 4 by releasing a new single titled 'Morning Dew (Donk),' her first musical output since the 2024 album 'Act II: Cowboy Carter.' The drop came as Americans celebrated the Fourth of July holiday, providing a major entertainment news moment.
New Single and Anniversary Reissue
According to a press release, the single 'starts a 60-day countdown to her next birthday, and the re-issue of B'DAY, her ground-breaking second album that was released two decades ago on September 4, 2006.' The 20th-anniversary edition of 'B'Day' will include this new track, which was co-written by Beyoncé, Pharrell Williams, The-Dream, and Darius Dixon, and produced by Beyoncé and Pharrell Williams.
Speculation About 'Act III' Continues
The Beyhive, Beyoncé's dedicated fanbase, has long anticipated her 'Act III' project. Many speculate it will be a rock tribute, following the pattern of 2022's 'Act I: Renaissance' (homage to disco, club, house, and funk) and 2024's 'Act II: Cowboy Carter' (a love letter to country, southern music, and her Texas roots).
Clues have accumulated: Beyoncé dressed as rock/funk icon Betty Davis for Halloween 2024, participated in Levi's 'Denim Cowboy' campaign last year (ending with her riding off on a motorcycle), and posted purple-themed photos in April that fans interpreted as a nod to Prince, who died in April 2016.
'Morning Dew (Donk)' reinforces the rock theory with its opening lines referencing Prince's legendary 1984 film 'Purple Rain,' which spawned a hit single and soundtrack of the same name.
