A concerned citizen has drawn attention to the escalating threat of extreme heatwaves in Pakistan, highlighting the severe impacts on daily life, public health, and economic activity. In a letter to the editor, Iffat Iftikhar from Lahore expressed deep worry over the rising temperatures experienced across the country, particularly during the current summer season.
Record High Temperatures and Health Risks
Many cities have recently recorded exceptionally high temperatures, causing widespread discomfort and serious health risks for millions. Outdoor workers, students, and elderly citizens are among the worst affected. Hospitals often report an increase in cases of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and other heat-related illnesses during such periods. Experts have repeatedly warned that climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of heatwaves, making them a major challenge for countries like Pakistan.
According to Iftikhar, public awareness of preventive measures remains limited, and many urban areas lack adequate green spaces that could help reduce extreme temperatures. She emphasized the need for urgent action to mitigate the effects of heatwaves.
Proposed Solutions and Government Action
To address this issue, Iftikhar urged the government to strengthen climate adaptation policies, expand tree-planting initiatives, improve public awareness campaigns, and ensure the availability of clean drinking water in public places. Citizens should also play their part by conserving energy, planting trees, and adopting environmentally responsible practices.
In a related development, the government has approved a grant of Rs570 million for the restoration of infrastructure in a small industrial estate. This investment aims to support economic recovery and resilience against climate impacts.
A Call for Collective Responsibility
Iftikhar requested the publication of her letter so that both authorities and the public recognize the urgency of the issue and take meaningful action before the situation worsens further. She called for a collective effort to combat the growing threat of extreme heatwaves in Pakistan.
