Heatwave Causes 3,700 Excess Deaths in Three European Countries

Excess Deaths Surge Across Three European Nations

France, the Netherlands, and Belgium have reported a combined total of approximately 3,700 excess deaths during the June heatwave that brought record-breaking temperatures across Europe. Authorities caution that these figures are preliminary and are expected to increase as more data becomes available.

The heatwave, which lasted from around June 20 to June 28, has been described by experts as the worst recorded in Europe. It caused significant disruption to power generation, damaged infrastructure, and overwhelmed healthcare systems. Scientists have stated that the extreme heat was almost certainly driven by climate change.

France Records 2,025 Excess Deaths

French Health Minister Stephanie Rist announced on local television Friday that there were 2,025 excess deaths recorded in France during the heatwave. The increase was particularly notable among people aged over 45. According to France's public health authority, deaths at home rose by 91% between June 22 and June 28 compared to the previous week. Deaths in nursing homes and healthcare facilities also saw an increase.

“Mortality will … be higher than these initial figures suggest,” the authority warned in a bulletin, indicating that the full impact of the heatwave has yet to be captured.

Belgium Reports Unprecedented Mortality

Belgium's Health Ministry reported on Thursday that it had registered excess mortality of about 1,200 deaths between June 18 and June 29. Of these, 530 deaths were among people aged 85 or older, while 180 excess deaths occurred in individuals under 65. The ministry described the situation as unprecedented in the country.

“Such excess mortality during a heatwave is unprecedented in our country,” the ministry said in a statement.

Netherlands Sees 480 Excess Deaths

Authorities in the Netherlands stated that the heatwave led to approximately 480 excess deaths, primarily among individuals aged over 80. The figures align with the broader trend across the region, where the elderly have been disproportionately affected by the extreme temperatures.

The heatwave has highlighted the growing risks posed by climate change, with scientists emphasizing that such events are becoming more frequent and intense. As Europe continues to experience rising temperatures, public health systems are under increasing pressure to protect vulnerable populations.
