The federal cabinet has approved the implementation of a Track & Trace System for pharmaceutical products across Pakistan, a major initiative to eliminate counterfeit, fake, and substandard medicines. Health Minister Mustafa Kamal announced the decision, stating that the government has also approved amendments to the Drug Labeling and Packing Rules, 1978, enabling a modern digital medicine verification system.
Key Features of the System
Under the new framework, all pharmaceutical manufacturers and importers must place standardized 2D barcodes and serialization data on medicine packaging. This system allows medicines to be tracked throughout the supply chain, from production to consumer use, helping regulators identify and remove counterfeit products.
Benefits for Consumers
Consumers will be able to verify key information, including a medicine's authenticity, expiry date, and price, enhancing transparency and public confidence in the healthcare system.
Implementation and Oversight
The rollout will be overseen by the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP), which will issue technical guidelines and support industry compliance. Authorities say the initiative will strengthen pharmaceutical regulation, improve supply chain security, and align Pakistan with international best practices in medicine oversight.
Officials describe the Track & Trace System as a historic step toward protecting public health and ensuring safer access to quality medicines nationwide.
