Israel Appoints First Resident Ambassador to Slovenia Amid Diplomatic Reset
Israel Names First Resident Envoy to Slovenia

Israel has appointed its first-ever resident ambassador to Slovenia, signaling a significant diplomatic reset following a change in government in Ljubljana. The Israeli foreign ministry announced on Sunday that Ruth Cohen-Dar, who previously served as non-resident ambassador to Slovenia and Malta, will become the country's first permanent envoy based in the Slovenian capital.

Background of Strained Relations

Ties between Israel and Slovenia had deteriorated under the previous center-left government of Prime Minister Robert Golob, which had characterized Israel's military operations in Gaza as genocide. The strained relations led to a prolonged downturn in diplomatic engagement between the two nations.

Shift Under New Government

Relations have warmed considerably since conservative Prime Minister Janez Jansa assumed office. The new government has taken several steps to realign its foreign policy, including lifting an arms embargo on Israel, scrapping entry bans on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and two of his ministers, and reversing a ban on imports from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

According to the Israeli foreign ministry, the decision to establish the embassy was made after many years of strained relations and followed the formation of the new government under Jansa, described as a friend of Israel.

Symbolic Gestures

Jansa's government has also removed a Palestinian flag that had been symbolically displayed on the government building since Slovenia recognized Palestinian statehood in 2024. This move further underscores the shift in diplomatic posture.

Embassy Opening

The appointment of a resident ambassador follows Israel's decision last month to open an embassy in Slovenia, marking a new chapter in bilateral ties. The embassy will facilitate closer diplomatic, economic, and cultural exchanges between the two countries.
