Saudi Arabia Urges Responsible AI Governance at UN

Saudi Arabia has called for strengthened international cooperation to ensure the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) and to harness its potential for advancing sustainable development. The Kingdom delivered a statement on behalf of the Arab Group during the UN General Assembly’s interactive dialogue in New York with the co-chairs of the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI.

Saudi Envoy Highlights Key Principles

In a statement by Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Abdulaziz Alwasil, the Kingdom welcomed efforts to implement the Global Digital Compact and establish the independent panel on AI. Alwasil emphasized the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation among governments, the UN, the private sector, academic institutions, and civil society, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

The Kingdom stressed that member states should play a central role in any future AI governance mechanisms, while respecting each country’s sovereign right to formulate national policies in line with its development priorities and needs.

Ethical Frameworks and Risk Mitigation

The Saudi envoy highlighted the importance of developing ethical frameworks for the responsible use of AI based on transparency, reliability, and accountability. These frameworks must safeguard privacy and human rights while taking into account cultural and societal values. The Kingdom also emphasized the need to address risks arising from the misuse of AI technologies, including misinformation, deepfakes, and cyberattacks, to strengthen public trust and promote their safe and beneficial use worldwide.
