A Pakistan Air Force officer was fatally shot in Islamabad on Sunday while attempting to protect a woman during a confrontation near the PAF headquarters, according to officials. The suspect fled the scene and remains at large, with authorities actively pursuing his arrest.

Incident Details

The shooting took place near Shaheen Chowk on Islamabad's 9th Avenue, a busy area close to government offices and the PAF Headquarters. Islamabad police spokesman Muhammad Taqi Jawad reported that Group Captain Asim Tariq, the deceased officer, was leaving his office when he observed a man arguing with a woman and decided to intervene.

“As he attempted to intervene, the suspect pulled out a firearm and shot the officer at the scene before fleeing,” Jawad said. “The officer later succumbed to his injuries.” Police promptly responded and took the woman into custody for questioning.

Suspect and Investigation

Initial investigations identified the suspect as Saad, who entered Islamabad from Rawalpindi on a motorcycle accompanied by the woman, according to Jawad. Law enforcement agencies are conducting a manhunt for the suspect. The PAF spokesperson confirmed that Group Captain Tariq is survived by his wife and two children. A detailed statement from the military's media wing is expected shortly.

Official Response

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi expressed grief over the incident, describing the officer as “a martyr who lost his life while trying to protect a woman.” Naqvi directed authorities to ensure the suspect’s swift arrest and requested a report from the Islamabad police chief. “No effort should be spared in bringing the perpetrator to justice and ensuring justice for the family of the martyred officer,” the minister stated.
