False Claim: UK Warned Israel Against Striking Iran Again

Multiple pro-Iranian users on social media platform X have been claiming since Wednesday that the United Kingdom warned Israel it would mobilise international action against it if Israel launched another strike on Iran. However, no such warning has been issued by the British government.

Background

US and Israeli forces launched a war against Iran on February 28, resulting in a full-scale multi-state conflict in the Middle East. On Sunday, US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that the US and Iran had reached a deal declaring “the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts”. Trump signed the peace deal in France during the G7 summit, while Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also signed the document on Wednesday, Tehran confirmed. PM Shehbaz signed the Memorandum of Understanding as the mediator on Thursday.

The Viral Claim

On Wednesday, an X user with a history of pro-Iranian posts shared a claim that the UK had warned Israel it would rally global action against it if Israel struck Iran again. The post included images of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and British Prime Minister Kier Starmer with the caption: “Breaking: UK issues strong warning, UK says it will call all countries to take action against Israel if it again strikes Iran and causes the blocking of the Strait of Hormuz”. The post gained 461,000 views.

Another pro-Iranian user shared the same claim with the same visual, gaining 771,000 views. A third similar post garnered 59,000 views. An Indian journalist shared the claim, which received 43,000 views. Other users posted similar wording, collectively accumulating 42,000 views. None of the posts provided any evidence, official statement, government document, press release, or credible media report.

Fact-Check Methodology

A keyword search using terms like “United Kingdom”, “Britain”, “Israel”, “Iran”, “global action”, “warning”, and “strike again” found no credible international, British, Iranian, or Israeli media reports about such a warning. No official statement from the UK government, the British Foreign Office, the Prime Minister’s Office, or any senior British official was found.

A UK government press release on Tuesday thanked Pakistan for its role in brokering the US-Iran peace agreement and reaffirmed Britain’s commitment to regional stability, but contained no warning against Israel. A report by Turkish media outlet Anadolu Agency stated that PM Starmer welcomed the US-Iran agreement and described it as an important step towards ending the conflict, but again no warning was mentioned.

Conclusion

The claim that the UK warned Israel it would rally global action against it if Israel strikes Iran again is false. The British government issued no such warning. This fact check was originally published by iVerify Pakistan — a project of CEJ-IBA and UNDP.
