Israeli Strike Kills Al Jazeera Journalist in Gaza, Military Claims He Was Hamas Operative
Israeli Strike Kills Al Jazeera Journalist in Gaza

Qatar-based Al Jazeera confirmed on Saturday that an Israeli airstrike killed one of its journalists, Ahmed Wishah, in the Gaza Strip. The strike targeted a house in the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza, according to the broadcaster. The Israeli military stated it carried out a "precise strike" on Wishah, claiming he was a Hamas militant, but provided no evidence.

Details of the Attack

Al Jazeera reported that Wishah, a cameraman, was killed when an Israeli drone struck the house in Bureij. The strike also wounded several other people. The channel's correspondent said the attack was carried out by a drone. This incident marks another death of an Al Jazeera journalist in Gaza since the conflict began on October 7, 2023.

Israeli Military Claims

An Israeli military spokesman told AFP that the strike targeted Wishah because he was a "Hamas terrorist." In a later statement, the military said Wishah had served as a "sniper operative" for Hamas and was killed alongside two other Hamas militants. The military did not release any evidence to support these accusations.

Al Jazeera Rejects Accusations

On Sunday, Al Jazeera rejected the Israeli accusations, calling them "baseless." In a statement, the network said it "condemns the Israeli occupation army’s baseless accusations, which seek to justify its crimes against Al Jazeera journalists and cameramen in Gaza, most recently the killing of cameraman Ahmed Wishah." The broadcaster emphasized that Wishah was a journalist performing his duty.

Previous Losses for Al Jazeera

Wishah's brother, Mohammed, also an Al Jazeera journalist, was killed in April by Israeli shelling while traveling in his vehicle. The network has lost several journalists since October 7, 2023, highlighting the dangers faced by media personnel in the conflict zone.

Context of the Conflict

The Gaza Strip has been under intense Israeli bombardment since the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023. Journalists have been among the casualties, with many killed while reporting on the war. International press freedom groups have repeatedly called for the protection of journalists in conflict areas.
