Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday dismissed reports that the United States had imposed restrictions on Israeli military operations in Lebanon, labeling such claims as 'fake news.' Speaking at a weekly Cabinet meeting, Netanyahu stated, 'I heard it was said in the media that President Trump asked not to act against terror tunnels in Lebanon. This is a legend, fake news. He didn't say anything to me about it, and I didn't ask him. We operate according to our considerations.'
Contradicting Earlier Reports
Netanyahu's remarks contradicted a report by Israel's public broadcaster KAN from late last month. According to KAN, Israel had provided US officials with detailed intelligence on alleged Hezbollah tunnels in the Ali al-Taher Heights in southern Lebanon in an effort to secure US approval for military operations in the area. The report suggested that Israel sought a US green light to continue its military activities in Lebanon, a notion Netanyahu firmly rejected.
Gaza Reconstruction Condition
Turning to the situation in Gaza, Netanyahu stated that there would be no reconstruction in the enclave before it is disarmed. This position departs from the sequencing outlined in US President Donald Trump's plan to end the war. Netanyahu's stance underscores his government's insistence on security guarantees before any rebuilding efforts commence.
The prime minister's statements come amid ongoing tensions along Israel's northern border with Lebanon and the continuing conflict in Gaza. Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group, has been accused of constructing tunnels into Israeli territory, a charge the group denies. Netanyahu's denial of US involvement in operational decisions reinforces his government's narrative of independent military action.
