Prisoner dies mysteriously in Badin jail, probe demanded

A prisoner from Matli taluka died under mysterious circumstances at District Jail Badin on Sunday, sparking calls for a transparent and impartial investigation. The deceased was identified as Hussain son of Suleman Kachhi, a resident of Matli.

Incident Details

According to jail administration, an FIR No. 160/2026 had been registered against Hussain at Matli Police Station. He was sent to District Jail Badin on judicial remand by the Civil Judge and Judicial Magistrate-II Matli on June 4. In an official statement, the jail administration said the prisoner went to the washroom adjacent to the barrack near the jail kitchen on Sunday, where he allegedly hanged himself and ended his life. The body was later shifted to Indus Hospital Badin from the jail, according to reports.

Civil Society Concerns

However, civil society leaders have expressed serious concern and suspicion over the incident. They alleged that the administration of District Jail Badin has long been run by a sepoy and a head clerk, turning the jail into a place of torture for inmates. They claimed that millions of rupees are allegedly collected daily in the name of exempting prisoners from labor, arranging family meetings, and providing other facilities, while substandard food is served to inmates. They further alleged that prisoners who do not pay are subjected to physical and mental harassment and torture, and that the budget allocated for prisoners' food only exists on paper.
