The Turkish government is intensifying its crackdown on the opposition, with fresh arrests on Friday targeting elected officials from the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) as it confronts a deepening leadership crisis. Authorities carried out operations against CHP-run municipalities in Istanbul's islands district and in southern Turkey over allegations including corruption and fraud.
Coordinated Raids Across Four Cities
Police conducted simultaneous raids in four cities, detaining 37 of 47 suspects named in arrest warrants, according to a statement from the Istanbul prosecutor's office. Among those detained was Adalar (Islands) Mayor Ali Ercan Akpolat.
Allegations Against Detained Officials
The suspects are accused of bribery, embezzlement, forgery of official documents, forming and leading a criminal organization, and abuse of office, the statement said.
This latest action underscores the government's tightening grip on opposition figures and comes amid a leadership crisis within the CHP, which has been grappling with internal divisions and challenges to its leadership.
