Curacao goalkeeper Eloy Room produced a stunning 15-save performance to help the Blue Wave secure a 0-0 draw against heavily favored Ecuador on Saturday night, earning the tiny island nation its first-ever World Cup point. The 37-year-old Room bounced back from a 7-1 loss to Germany with one of the finest goalkeeping displays in World Cup history, falling just one save short of the record set by Tim Howard of the United States against Belgium in 2014.
Historic Achievement for Curacao
The draw at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, marked a historic moment for Curacao, a Caribbean island with a population of about 150,000. Room, who also played a key role in Curacao's qualification by shutting out Jamaica last November, was the hero of the night. His 15 saves were the second-most in a World Cup match since saves became an official statistic in 1966.
Curacao's 78-year-old coach Dick Advocaat praised his team's defensive organization, saying, "We knew Ecuador would come at us, but Eloy was incredible. This point is a testament to the spirit of our players." Ecuador's head coach expressed frustration, stating, "We had so many chances but couldn't finish. Room was outstanding."
Group E Implications
The draw kept both teams alive in the knockout race, but it put Ecuador in a precarious position. Germany, which beat Ivory Coast 2-1 earlier in the day on a stoppage-time goal by Deniz Undav, clinched Group E with the result. Ecuador now faces a must-win match against Germany in New York on Thursday, while Curacao will take on Ivory Coast in Philadelphia.
Ecuador dominated possession and created numerous scoring opportunities throughout the match. In the first half, veteran striker Enner Valencia had a clear path to goal but saw Room guess correctly and dive to his left to deflect the shot. Moises Caicedo forced another spectacular save early in the second half, and Valencia's well-placed header was knocked wide by Room. On a subsequent corner kick, Room made two more sensational saves before Curacao cleared the ball.
Atmosphere and Support
The stadium was filled with Ecuadorian fans dressed in bright yellow shirts, creating a sea of color that resembled a convention of Minions. Only a few small pockets of blue-clad Curacao supporters were present in a venue that could house half of the island's population. Among the notable attendees were Kansas City Royals players Bobby Witt Jr., Salvador Perez, and Starling Marte.
The pressure on Ecuador increased after Germany's victory over Ivory Coast, meaning La Tri faced elimination with a loss. Despite the home-field advantage, Curacao's disciplined defense and Room's heroics ensured the score remained level.
Looking Ahead
Both teams still have a chance to advance to the knockout stage. Curacao, with its first World Cup point in hand, will look to build on this result against Ivory Coast. Ecuador, meanwhile, must beat Germany and hope for favorable results elsewhere. The match on Thursday will determine the final group standings.
