The Democratic Republic of Congo made history on Saturday by advancing to the knockout rounds of the World Cup for the first time, defeating Uzbekistan 3-1 in Atlanta. The victory secured third place in Group K and set up a dream clash with England in the next round. DR Congo's win was their first ever in a World Cup match.
DR Congo's Historic Achievement
DR Congo striker Yoane Wissa expressed the team's pride after the match. "We love our national team. We love what we represent. I think tonight we just showed what it means for us is just to fight no matter what," he said. The result continued a stunning World Cup for African sides, with 9 of 10 African teams reaching the second round; only Tunisia failed to advance.
Iran's Elimination After Chaotic Finish
Iran's hopes of advancing from their group ended in dramatic fashion as Austria and Algeria played out a 3-3 draw in Group J. A win for either side would have allowed Iran to progress, but the match took several twists. Algeria's Riyad Mahrez scored in the third minute of stoppage time to put Algeria 3-2 ahead, seemingly sending Iran through. However, in the sixth minute of injury time, Sasa Kalajdzic headed in an equalizer for Austria, sparking pandemonium in Kansas City and dashing Iran's hopes.
Austria and Algeria React
Austria midfielder Marcel Sabitzer, who scored Austria's second goal, described the closing moments as "weird." "It's a draw normally, so you think you go through and then one moment from Algeria," he said. "We did it and we were very lucky at the end, but very happy about that." The result allowed Austria and Algeria to fill the final two berths in the last 32, with both teams advancing from the group.
