Egyptian teenager Hamza Abdelkarim made history on June 21, 2026, by becoming the youngest Egyptian and Arab player ever to appear in a FIFA World Cup. The 18-year-old forward came on as a second-half substitute for Mohamed Salah in Egypt's 1-1 draw against Belgium in Vancouver, just days after completing a dream move from Al-Ahly to Barcelona.
Historic World Cup Debut
Abdelkarim's debut marked a milestone for Egyptian football. FC Barcelona's official page celebrated the occasion by posting a picture of Hamza in the national team jersey with the caption: “Hamza Abdelkarim featured in Egypt’s 1-1 draw against Belgium on his FIFA World Cup debut.”
His rapid rise from Al-Ahly's youth academy to the global stage has captured attention. He joined Al-Ahly in 2020 at age 12 and won the Republic Championship three consecutive years. His former coach at Al-Ahly, Osama Zaki, told Arab News: “The player possesses great ambition and professionalism despite his young age. He has managed to develop himself in all physical and technical aspects.”
Coach's Insights on Development
Zaki highlighted that Abdelkarim's selection by Egypt coach Hossam Hassan was a key factor in Barcelona's decision to sign him. He predicted the youngster would score goals in the 2026 World Cup. “The player possesses great skills as a target man and playmaker, in addition to his diverse heading abilities. He also boasts physical strength and speed with the ball, and I expect that if he shines in the World Cup, he will have a place in Barcelona’s first team,” Zaki said.
Zaki attributed Abdelkarim's rapid personality development to his knowledge and appreciation of culture. The coach wanted Abdelkarim to join Al-Ahly after his first trial, as his abilities were evident from day one. The youngster excelled alongside other outstanding youth players like Mohannad El-Shami and Bilal Attia.
Playing Style and Future Prospects
Regarding his playing style, Zaki described Abdelkarim as a penalty box-focused striker whose performances combine the strengths of Emad Moteab and Ahmed Hossam, known as “Mido.” He concluded: “I feel proud of him, as he is still at the beginning of his career and has much to do to achieve future success.”
Abdelkarim joined Barcelona Atletic on a six-month loan with an option to buy during the winter transfer window. He immediately impressed, attracting attention from Barcelona's management and the Egyptian national coach. His selection for the 2026 World Cup squad made him the youngest Arab and Egyptian player to ever participate in the tournament.
