Morocco delivered another statement performance on Saturday, defeating World Cup co-host Canada 3-0 to book a place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals and further cement their status among the tournament’s leading contenders.
Ounahi Shines with a Brace
Midfielder Azzedine Ounahi was the architect of Morocco’s victory, scoring twice in a dominant second-half display before substitute Soufiane Rahimi added a stoppage-time goal to complete an emphatic triumph at Houston Stadium. After a fiercely contested and physical first half, the breakthrough arrived in the 50th minute when Ounahi unleashed a precise right-footed strike from outside the penalty area after a cleverly worked free-kick involving Achraf Hakimi.
Canada’s Struggle and Bounou’s Heroics
Canada attempted to respond but struggled to break down Morocco’s disciplined defence. Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, born in Canada to Moroccan parents, produced several important saves to preserve another clean sheet. Ounahi doubled Morocco’s advantage eight minutes from time, calmly finishing from close range after an excellent pass from Brahim Díaz, before Rahimi sealed the victory with a clinical finish on the counterattack deep into stoppage time.
Historic Run Continues
The result marks Morocco’s second consecutive appearance in the World Cup quarter-finals, reinforcing the remarkable progress the Atlas Lions have made since their historic run to the semi-finals in Qatar in 2022. Canada, appearing in only their third World Cup and buoyed by their first-ever knockout victory in the previous round, saw their memorable campaign come to an end despite the passionate backing of their supporters. Morocco will now face the winner of France and Paraguay for a place in the semi-finals.
