Qatar's hopes of reaching the knockout stage for the first time were dashed after a 2-1 defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina at Seattle Stadium on June 24, 2026. The loss leaves the Maroons at the bottom of Group B with just one point, ending their World Cup journey prematurely.
First-Half Drama and Missed Opportunities
Qatar endured a slow start, allowing Bosnia to dominate possession. In the 29th minute, 18-year-old Kerim Alajbegovic opened the scoring with a stunning strike from range, evading two defenders before slotting past goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada. Five minutes later, Edin Dzeko's cross deflected off Qatar left-back Sultan Al-Brake and into his own net, doubling Bosnia's lead.
Qatar pulled one back in the 42nd minute when Edmilson Junior squared a cross from Pedro Miguel to Hassan Al-Haydos, who converted from close range. In first-half stoppage time, Miguel struck the post after a neat pass from Akram Afif, leaving fans in disbelief.
Second-Half Pressure Falls Short
Qatar carried attacking intent into the second half but remained cautious. Afif had a chance in the 57th minute, firing into the side netting with Ahmed Al-Ganehi unmarked at the far post. Despite pushing forward, Qatar could not find an equalizer. Bosnia sealed the win in the 80th minute when Ermin Mahmic scored from a scramble in the box, his second goal of the tournament.
Group B Standings and Qatar's Exit
With the defeat, Qatar finishes bottom of Group B with one point, one more than their 2022 campaign. Switzerland topped the group after a 2-1 win over Canada, who finished second. Bosnia and Herzegovina finished third with four points, likely enough for a Round of 32 spot. According to coach Julen Lopetegui, the team's late attacking display showed promise, but the early defensive approach cost them.
