Wyndham Clark held on to win the US Open for the second time in four years, finishing with a 3-over-par 73 on Sunday to secure a one-stroke victory at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York. His four-round total of 4-under 276 gave him the title, despite a shaky front nine that saw his six-shot lead shrink to just one on multiple occasions.
Clark's Gritty Performance
Clark, who started the day with a commanding six-shot advantage, never lost the lead but faced relentless pressure from the chasing pack. He became the third player to collect two US Open victories since 2017, joining Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau. His first major came in 2023 when he outlasted Rory McIlroy at Los Angeles Country Club.
Runner-up Sam Burns shot a final-round 67 to finish at 3 under, just one stroke back. South Korea's Tom Kim carded a 70 to take third place at 1 under. J.T. Poston (67), Keith Mitchell (70), and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (71) shared fourth place at even par.
Drama Down the Stretch
Clark's lead was threatened when Burns missed a birdie putt on the 18th hole that would have tied him for the lead. Earlier, Clark's tee shot on No. 16 found the fescue, but he escaped and sank a 24-foot putt for an unlikely birdie to extend his lead back to two shots. However, he three-putted for bogey on No. 17, reducing his margin to one stroke.
Clark played the front nine in 3 over par without a birdie but steadied himself with a birdie on No. 10. A bogey on No. 13 cut his lead to one stroke, while Burns holed a 17-foot birdie putt on No. 16 to keep the pressure on. Tom Kim also lurked, pulling within two shots with two holes to play.
Scheffler's Grand Slam Bid Falls Short
Scottie Scheffler, attempting to complete the career Grand Slam on his 30th birthday, never mounted a serious challenge. A three-putt bogey on No. 14 damaged his chances, and he finished at even par. Earlier, Burns had closed within three shots after his fourth birdie of the round on No. 8.
Other Highlights
J.T. Poston, who won the Memorial Tournament two weeks ago, shot 67 to share fourth place. The best rounds of the day were 66s from Sweden's Ludvig Aberg and Chile's Joaquin Niemann. Niemann tied for seventh at 1 over, while Aberg finished at 3 over, tied for 17th.
Clark's victory is his second of the year, following his win at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson in the spring. He becomes the first player since 2017 to win multiple US Opens, joining an elite group that includes Koepka and DeChambeau.
