Former boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather is facing new legal trouble after prosecutors in Nevada filed felony charges linked to an alleged unpaid luxury watch purchase. According to reports first detailed by ESPN, the retired champion has been accused of issuing a bad cheque connected to a $200,000 Audemars Piguet watch obtained from Las Vegas jewellery retailer Gold & Beyond.
Details of the Allegations
Court documents reportedly state that Mayweather wrote a cheque from a Wells Fargo account on December 31, 2024, to pay for the timepiece, which had been purchased several days earlier. Authorities allege that the account lacked sufficient funds when the cheque was issued. The case has resulted in two felony counts. One charge relates to theft involving property worth more than $100,000, while the second accuses Mayweather of issuing a cheque with intent to defraud. Prosecutors allege that the boxing icon acted knowingly and without lawful authority. If convicted, the charges could carry significant penalties under Nevada law.
Prior Attempts at Resolution
The dispute reportedly remained private for months before escalating into a criminal matter. Marc Cook, attorney for Gold & Beyond, told ESPN that the business initially attempted to settle the issue without involving authorities. According to Cook, the retailer continued to trust that Mayweather would eventually complete the payment and delayed legal action in the hope of reaching a resolution. However, after numerous attempts allegedly failed, the company decided to move forward with the complaint. The attorney said the watch had remained in Mayweather’s possession for more than a year while the payment issue remained unresolved.
Broader Financial Issues
The latest controversy arrives amid increasing attention surrounding the former world champion’s finances. In recent months, Mayweather has reportedly been involved in several separate legal and financial disputes. Among those issues are reports of unpaid rent connected to a luxury apartment in Manhattan, tax related matters and ongoing lawsuits concerning disputed earnings. Mayweather himself has launched legal claims involving hundreds of millions of dollars connected to past business arrangements and revenue streams.
Public Image and Legal Outlook
Despite the mounting headlines, Mayweather has continued to maintain his public image as one of the wealthiest athletes in sporting history. Throughout his career, the undefeated boxer built the “Money” brand and generated enormous earnings from blockbuster fights and business ventures. Legal experts often note that financial disputes can frequently be resolved through restitution agreements, and maximum prison sentences are uncommon in such cases. Nevertheless, the filing of felony charges marks a serious development for the entertainment and sports personality. Neither Mayweather nor his representatives had publicly commented on the allegations at the time of reporting.
