Andreeva Fends Off Baptiste to Reach Madrid Open Final

Mirra Andreeva displayed remarkable composure to overcome a spirited challenge from Hailey Baptiste, securing a 6-4, 7-6(8) victory in a gripping semifinal at the Madrid Open on Thursday. The 19-year-old Russian, who celebrated her birthday a day earlier, advanced to the final of the claycourt tournament, where she will await the winner of the match between Marta Kostyuk and Anastasia Potapova.

Andreeva's Dominant Start

Andreeva, seeded ninth, started the match with immense confidence, conceding only two points on her serve in the first set. She broke Baptiste's serve in the seventh game with a precise backhand down the line, sealing the set 6-4. Baptiste, who had upset world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinals, struggled with consistency, making 16 unforced errors in the opening set.

Baptiste's Fightback

The second set saw Andreeva take a 3-2 lead after another break, but Baptiste refused to back down. The American saved a match point in the ninth game and capitalized on Andreeva's double fault and missed smash to break back, leveling the set at 5-5. The set eventually went to a tiebreak, where Baptiste won four consecutive points to take control.

Tiebreak Drama

Andreeva fought back with precise backhands near the sidelines, saving three set points. Baptiste saved a match point with an ace, but ultimately hit a return long, handing Andreeva the tiebreak 10-8 and the match. "I feel so much adrenaline inside, I feel like I'm still nervous," Andreeva said in her on-court interview. "Honestly, I'm just so happy that I won... I'm very happy with how I served today."

This marks Andreeva's third appearance in a WTA 1000 final, having previously won the Dubai Championships and the Indian Wells Open last year.
