Sony ended its major State of Play showcase with a significant reveal: the next installment in the God of War series. Titled God of War Laufey, the game is once again developed by Sony's Santa Monica Studio. While a release date has not been announced, the game is confirmed for the PS5.
New Protagonist and Gameplay Changes
Instead of the perpetually furious Kratos, players will take control of Faye, also known as Laufey, as the title suggests. This shift brings a different tone and gameplay style. While the overall atmosphere remains similar to previous God of War titles, the gameplay features more acrobatic action complemented by magic, moving away from Kratos's heavy violence. Players will encounter a giant, six-legged flying cat and a talking gelatinous cube named Phranque that fights alongside them. A 20-minute reveal video showcases the game in action.
Cast and Development
Deborah Ann Woll reprises her role as Faye from God of War Ragnarök. The cast also includes Jack Quaid as Phranque and Perlina Lau as Rue, the talking ribbons attached to Faye's sword. Since its soft reboot in 2018, God of War has become a flagship series for Sony, alongside The Last of Us and Horizon. A sequel, Ragnarök, launched on PS5 in 2022, and a live-action series is in development for Prime Video. Earlier this year, Sony surprise-launched a 2D prequel called Sons of Sparta.
Industry Impact
The new game marks a shift for blockbuster video games, which have long focused on stories about fathers. With Faye as the lead, God of War Laufey gives mothers their due spotlight.
