Alix Wilton Regan has opened up about stepping into one of gaming's most iconic roles, revealing that her approach to playing Lara Croft is guided by a simple philosophy: 'No Laras left behind.' The British actress, known for her work in video game franchises including Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Assassin's Creed, will portray Lara Croft in two upcoming Tomb Raider titles: Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst. The games mark the adventurer's long-awaited return after several years away from the spotlight.
Honoring All Eras of Lara Croft
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Wilton Regan said she is not interested in distancing herself from previous versions of the character. Instead, she wants her portrayal to honor every era of Lara Croft. 'It's less about distinguishing from past iterations,' she explained, 'and almost melding everything together.' She summed up her vision with the phrase: 'No Laras left behind.' The actress added that she hopes to create 'an amalgamation of everything that's come before', retaining the character's classic confidence and charisma while moving her into a new chapter. 'I want my Lara to be an amalgamation of everything that's come before, retaining that confident, sexy, sassy, classic Lara-ness, whilst bringing her forward into the next chapter of her life,' she said.
An Unusual Audition Story
Wilton Regan also shared the unusual story behind her audition. While on holiday in Italy, she received a call from her agent about the role and had to film a self-tape in a remote mountain villa with virtually no internet access. She later rode a moped to a nearby village and spent hours trying to upload the audition footage using a local bar's Wi-Fi connection. After four months and four rounds of auditions, she finally learned she had landed the coveted role. 'I screamed for about 20 minutes in my car and then I promptly burst into tears,' she recalled.
Upcoming Tomb Raider Titles
Wilton Regan's debut as Lara will come in Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a reimagining of the original 1996 game. She stressed that the project is not simply a remake, teasing that it will take players on 'a very different emotional journey' while connecting the character's classic adventures with the more recent Survivor trilogy. The second title, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, will tell an entirely new story set in northern India following a mythical catastrophe that unleashes ancient forces. Wilton Regan has been working on both games simultaneously since 2023 and continues to record performance-capture and voice-over material for the projects.
Potential Crossover with Sophie Turner
The actress is also enthusiastic about sharing the role of Lara Croft with other performers across the franchise. Sophie Turner is currently attached to Amazon's live-action Tomb Raider television series, and when asked about the possibility of making a cameo, Wilton Regan said she would 'love that', calling it a 'dream come true'.
