Pakistan Rises 27 Spots in ITU ICT Index 2026

Pakistan has recorded a major leap in the International Telecommunication Union's ICT Development Index 2026, climbing 27 positions with a 20% increase in its overall score, according to an official statement released on Friday. The country's index score rose from 56.4 in 2025 to 67.7 in 2026, marking a significant relative improvement of 20%. This progress reflects enhanced digital infrastructure and connectivity under a revised methodology established in 2023.

Key Metrics and Improvements

The ICT Development Index now emphasizes meaningful connectivity and is structured around two key pillars: Universal Connectivity, which measures network availability and infrastructure, and Meaningful Connectivity, which assesses reliability, affordability, inclusiveness, device ownership, and data traffic. Pakistan achieved a 22.8-point improvement in the connectivity pillar and attained a Meaningful Connectivity score of 79. These gains contributed to a 27-place rise in the global ranking.

Government Vision and Commitment

Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja attributed the improvement to Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif's vision for a digitally enabled Pakistan. She stated, "Pakistan's improvement in the index reflects Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif's vision for a digitally enabled Pakistan and the government's continued priority to the IT and telecom sectors." The minister highlighted that improved ICT indicators directly benefit education, employment, freelancing, entrepreneurship, business activity, and digital public services, particularly for youth and the digital workforce.
