A tragic accident in southern Egypt on Tuesday claimed the lives of nine children when a motorized tricycle plunged into a canal in the Abu Tig area of Assiut province. Two other children were injured, according to local officials.
Details of the Incident
The tricycle fell into the water in Abu Tig, a district in Assiut province located about 320 kilometers (199 miles) south of Cairo. The governor's office reported the incident in a Facebook statement, noting that the children were returning home from work on nearby farms when a steering malfunction caused the tricycle to overturn and enter the canal.
Local media outlet Cairo 24 stated that the children's ages ranged from 10 to 17. The conditions of the two injured children remained unclear. The bodies were taken to Abu Tig Hospital, according to the governor's office.
Response and Investigation
Photos released by the governor's office showed dozens of people gathered at the canal, with divers searching the water. Assiut Governor Mohamed Elwan ordered authorities to implement safety measures, including the installation of concrete barriers along the canal sides to prevent similar accidents.
Broader Context of Traffic Safety in Egypt
Deadly traffic accidents are a recurring problem in Egypt, claiming thousands of lives annually. The country has a poor transportation safety record, with speeding, bad roads, and weak enforcement of traffic laws cited as primary causes. Earlier this year, a collision between a truck and a pickup truck on a highway killed 18 people, according to officials.
