The Punjab Wildlife Rangers have launched an initiative to help zoo animals cope with soaring temperatures by providing ice treats made from fruits and vegetables. Bears, monkeys, giraffes, and several other species in Lahore Zoo, Safari Zoo, and Pirrowal Wildlife Park are being offered frozen nutritional treats designed to keep them cool while encouraging natural feeding behaviour.
Environmental Enrichment Programme
According to the Punjab Wildlife Rangers, the initiative forms part of the department's environmental enrichment programme aimed at improving the welfare of captive animals. The programme focuses on promoting natural instincts, reducing heat stress, and enhancing both physical and mental well-being.
Lahore Zoo Deputy Director Shahzaib Khurshid said the frozen treats are prepared using apples, peaches, melons, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, and other nutritious ingredients. He explained that the ice-based diet helps regulate the animals' body temperature while encouraging them to search, explore, and remain physically active.
Impact on Animal Behaviour
The frozen treats are designed to mimic natural foraging behaviours, prompting animals to interact with the ice blocks and extract the embedded fruits and vegetables. This not only provides relief from the heat but also stimulates their cognitive abilities and prevents boredom. The initiative has been particularly beneficial for species that are more susceptible to heat stress, such as bears and primates.
Khurshid added that the programme has received positive feedback from visitors and animal welfare advocates. The zoo plans to continue the initiative throughout the summer months, adjusting the ingredients based on seasonal availability and the dietary needs of each species.
