PDMA Issues GLOF Warning for Upper Districts

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has warned of a heightened risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) in several upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as rising temperatures and forecast heavy rainfall are expected to accelerate glacier melting. According to the authority, the combination of intense heat and upcoming rain could trigger glacial lake outbursts, flash floods and landslides in vulnerable mountainous regions.

District Administrations on High Alert

District administrations in Upper and Lower Chitral, Swat, Bahrain, Upper Dir, Kohistan and Mansehra have been instructed to remain on high alert, strengthen monitoring in glacial areas and implement preventive measures to minimise potential risks. The PDMA has also directed rescue agencies to keep emergency teams, equipment and machinery ready for rapid response, while ensuring that evacuation plans are in place for residents living in high-risk locations.

Advisory for Tourists and Residents

Authorities have advised tourists to avoid unnecessary travel to glacial regions and stay away from rivers, streams and other fast-flowing waterways during periods of heavy rainfall. Residents have also been urged to exercise caution and avoid crossing seasonal streams as weather conditions deteriorate.
