Punjab Cracks Down on Helmetless Riders, Impounds Motorcycles for a Day
Punjab Impounds Motorcycles of Helmetless Riders for a Day

The Punjab government has intensified enforcement of helmet laws, with police now impounding motorcycles for a full day if riders are caught without head protection. The measure, effective across the province, aims to reduce fatalities and serious injuries from road accidents.

New Penalties for Helmetless Riding

Under the updated regulations, motorcyclists found without helmets will not only receive a traffic challan but will also have their vehicles seized for 24 hours. Officials stated that regular operations have been launched to achieve 100 percent helmet compliance. In addition, strict action is being taken against riders who fail to follow lane discipline.

Lane Violation Crackdown

Authorities reported that over 20,000 motorcycles were stopped last month alone for violating lane markings. The crackdown is part of a broader effort to protect citizens and reduce traffic accidents. Citizens have been urged to strictly adhere to lane lines and always wear helmets.

Digital Challan System Introduced

To ensure transparency and effective enforcement, a new digital challan system has been rolled out across Punjab, including Lahore. According to DIG Traffic Waqas Nazir, traffic police will issue challans through the One App, with videos and photos captured at the scene saved as evidence. Citizens will receive an alert SMS from 8070 containing a link to view their violation evidence, including footage and images.

DIG Nazir stated, “Citizens will be able to see complete evidence of their traffic violations, including videos and photos, by opening the link in the SMS, which will promote transparency and trust in the challaning process.” He added that the system ensures verifiable evidence for every traffic ticket.

Infrastructure Funding

Separately, a grant of Rs570 million has been approved for the restoration of infrastructure in small industrial estates, though details of the projects were not immediately available.
