The Punjab government has decided to suspend the driving licences of motorists operating smoke-emitting vehicles as part of an intensified campaign to curb air pollution and reduce smog in Lahore. The decision was announced by Chief Traffic Officer Syed Abdul Raheem Shirazi on Sunday under the provincial government's anti-smog drive launched on the directives of Maryam Nawaz and Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb.
New Enforcement Measures
Under the new enforcement measures, commercial vehicles found violating emission standards will also have their route permits suspended. The City Traffic Police have further banned the entry of tractor-trolleys and dumpers carrying sand, soil and other construction materials without tarpaulin covers. Authorities warned that legal action will be taken against violators.
Scale of the Campaign
Highlighting the scale of the campaign, the CTO said more than 114,000 smoke-emitting vehicles had been fined during the current fiscal year. He added that authorities had registered 1,401 cases under the anti-smog campaign, while action was taken against over 53,000 vehicles transporting uncovered construction material and 188,000 unfit vehicles.
AI-Based Monitoring System
Shirazi said the traffic police are using an artificial intelligence-based system to identify vehicles producing excessive emissions. He added that letters had also been sent to several government departments, directing them to ensure their official vehicle fleets comply with environmental standards.
Zero-Tolerance Policy
The CTO reaffirmed that the authorities would continue a zero-tolerance policy against vehicles contributing to air pollution as Lahore prepares for the annual smog season.
