DRAP Sets Oct 9 Deadline for Mandatory 2D Barcode on Medicine Packaging
DRAP Mandates 2D Barcode on Medicines by Oct 9

The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) has set October 9 as the deadline for pharmaceutical manufacturers and importers to implement a mandatory 2D barcode and serialization system on all medicine packaging, according to sources. The requirement applies to both human and veterinary medicines, and DRAP will oversee the nationwide rollout of the track and trace system.

Directives Issued to Stakeholders

DRAP has issued official notifications to key industry bodies, including the Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (PPMA), Pakistan Veterinary Pharmaceutical Association (PVPA), Pharma Bureau, the Pakistan Chemists and Druggists Association, provincial directors general of drug control, and chief drug inspectors. Pharmaceutical companies have been instructed to complete all preparations before the October 9 deadline to ensure full compliance.

Legal Framework and Consumer Benefits

The federal cabinet has already approved the Pharma Track and Trace System through amendments to the Drugs Labelling and Packing Rules, 1978. Once operational, consumers can verify medicine authenticity by scanning the 2D barcode, which will also provide product details such as expiry date, usage instructions, and official price. Officials believe the system will secure the pharmaceutical supply chain, improve traceability, and help detect counterfeit and substandard medicines before they reach consumers.
