Pakistan's Population Crisis: Urgent Action Needed for Development
Pakistan's Population Crisis Demands Urgent Action

Population Crosses 259 Million in 2026

Pakistan's population has surged past 259 million in 2026, making it the fifth most populous country globally, according to recent data. With a growth rate of 2.55% and approximately 19,000 babies born every day, the nation's infrastructure is buckling under immense pressure. Schools, hospitals, and the job market are struggling to keep pace with the rapid increase.

Alarming Socioeconomic Indicators

More than 44% of Pakistanis live below the poverty line, while 40% of children under the age of five suffer from stunting due to malnutrition. Millions of young people are entering adulthood without access to quality education or employment opportunities. This demographic trend, instead of being a dividend, is turning into a ticking time bomb for the nation's future.

Call for National Emergency Response

Iman Shahid, a concerned citizen from Rahim Yar Khan, urges the government to treat population management as a national emergency. She proposes establishing a Prime Minister-led commission involving all chief ministers to address this challenge. Investment in girls' education, family planning, and maternal healthcare is critical. Countries such as Bangladesh and Vietnam successfully reduced fertility rates through these very measures. Pakistan must act now before it is too late.
