Italy's electricity sector experienced a notable shift in its energy generation mix in 2025, as renewable energy production declined by 1.5% while electricity generation from thermal power plants increased by 5.2%, according to a recent report by the Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks and Environment (ARERA). This shift contributed to a 2.4% overall increase in total electricity production compared to the previous year.
Natural Gas Consumption and Imports Rise
The ARERA report also revealed that natural gas consumption in Italy increased by 2% in 2025 compared with 2024. Gas imports saw a significant rise, driven by a doubling of supplies from the United States and higher imports from Norway and the Netherlands. Specifically, liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports surged by 44% year-on-year, accounting for approximately one-third of Italy's total gas imports.
Impact on Energy Mix
The decline in renewable energy production and the increase in thermal power generation mark a reversal from previous trends, where renewables had been gaining share. The 2.4% rise in total electricity production reflects the increased reliance on thermal sources to meet demand.
