OGDCL's discovery at Bobi Deep-1 in Sanghar is a national opportunity. The well has produced 2,000 barrels of oil per day and 1.1 million standard cubic feet of gas per day during testing. More importantly, OGDCL has described it as the first hydrocarbon discovery from the Massive Sand play within the Bobi and Dhamraki Mining Lease. This means the significance of the discovery extends beyond one well. It validates further exploration in the surrounding region and opens the door for future reserve additions.
Shaping Energy Policy
For Pakistan, this is precisely the kind of development that should shape energy policy. The country cannot keep hoping for economic stability while relying so heavily on imported fuel. Every global price shock, exchange-rate movement and supply chain disruption immediately feeds into inflation, power costs and pressure on the rupee. Unless Pakistan reduces its dependence on hydrocarbon imports, its economic managers will remain trapped in defensive policymaking.

The government must therefore treat this discovery as a signal to move faster. Exploration and production companies need incentives, regulatory clarity and a stable policy environment. Investors must be assured that Pakistan is serious about developing its own energy resources. Budget sessions are the right moment to introduce targeted measures that encourage drilling, geological surveys, technology upgrades and industry-academia collaboration.

OGDCL's success also shows the value of indigenous expertise. The company did not abandon the project after technical challenges, but worked with local experts to overcome them.
