Punjab Chief Minister Unveils Major Plan to Promote Small Industries and Form Economic Transformation Committee
In a significant move to boost industrial development, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced a comprehensive plan to promote small industries across Punjab. The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by the chief minister to review measures for accelerating industrialisation in the province.
Formation of Punjab Economic Transformation Committee
As part of this initiative, the Punjab Economic Transformation Committee has been constituted to spearhead industrial growth. This 11-member committee will be headed by Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, with the provincial finance secretary serving as the panel's secretary. The committee's primary mandate is to identify economic potential through detailed district-level economic mapping and determine sectoral priorities for establishing industrial clusters in various districts.
Strategic Industrial Development Across Districts
The plan includes developing different districts as industrial hubs based on their local production capacity, skills, and economic needs. During the meeting, specific proposals were reviewed to transform Lahore into a hub for information technology software, garments, meat processing, and leather industries. Additionally, proposals to develop Gujranwala as a center for surgical instruments and sports goods manufacturing were also examined.
Key Responsibilities of the Transformation Committee
The Economic Transformation Committee will undertake several crucial tasks to ensure effective implementation of the industrial promotion plan:
- Set measurable indicators along with short- and long-term timelines for implementation
- Consult private-sector stakeholders to develop sector-wise actionable plans
- Work towards establishing a sustainable ecosystem for economic growth
- Focus on preparing a skilled workforce through tailored skill development programmes
Linking Local Products to Global Markets
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif emphasized the importance of connecting locally produced value-added products with global value chains. This strategic approach aims to strengthen exports and enhance industrial competitiveness in international markets. The committee will play a pivotal role in facilitating this integration by identifying opportunities and removing barriers to global market access.
The formation of the Punjab Economic Transformation Committee represents a significant step toward revitalizing the province's industrial sector. By focusing on district-specific industrial development, skill enhancement, and global market integration, the initiative aims to create sustainable economic growth and employment opportunities across Punjab.
