Islamabad - Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) announced on Sunday that customers may experience internet service degradation during the evenings from May 11 to May 18. In a post on social media platform X, the company stated that maintenance activity is planned on one of its submarine cables to repair a fault identified by the International Cable Consortium.
"Due to this maintenance, which will begin tomorrow (Monday) and may last for seven days, customers may face disruptions in their internet service," the company said. PTCL apologized for any inconvenience caused.
This is not the first such announcement. Last month, PTCL posted a similar notice on X, indicating that maintenance was scheduled on a submarine cable starting April 14, 2026, potentially lasting until April 20, 2026. At that time, the company also expressed regret for the anticipated service disruptions.
PTCL's financial performance has been under scrutiny. According to the finance ministry's Central Monitoring Unit, the company reported a net loss of over Rs10.46 billion in fiscal year 2025, despite earning revenue of Rs168.80 billion. Its total assets stood at Rs485.23 billion. In FY2023-24, PTCL recorded losses of Rs6.63 billion, while in FY2022-23, the loss was Rs15.54 billion. The company had previously posted a profit of Rs28 billion in 2005-05, the year management control was sold to UAE-based Etisalat. Profitability declined in subsequent years, eventually turning negative.
However, last month, reports indicated that PTCL returned to profit following the acquisition of Telenor Pakistan. The company also announced plans to formally launch Fifth Generation (5G) telecom services in May.
