The historic reservoirs along Darb Zubaida demonstrate sophisticated water management techniques, with a tiered interior design that helped improve access to water, filter impurities and protect the structures from flood damage. The stair-like interior is one of the defining engineering features of the reservoirs, increasing their stability while allowing them to withstand centuries of use.

Route and Scale of Darb Zubaida

Darb Zubaida features about 50 large reservoirs and water basins built to serve pilgrims and traders along the historic route, which stretches for more than 1,400 km. The route comprises 27 main stations and 27 secondary stations, extending from Kufa in southern Iraq through northern Saudi Arabia, including Rafha, Hail and Qassim, before reaching Makkah.

Expert Insights on Engineering Significance

Researcher, historian, archaeology enthusiast and tour guide Khalaf Al-Ghufaili said that the Darb Zubaida reservoirs were not merely water storage basins but engineering landmarks that reflected advanced solutions for water management and the service of pilgrimage and trade caravans. He explained that the tiered design allowed safe access to water at varying levels while reducing the impact of flash floods and protecting the walls and foundations from erosion and collapse.

Water Purification System

Al-Ghufaili added that the structures employed a precise water purification system in which rainwater and floodwater first passed through smaller basins, known as filters or preliminary reservoirs, where soil, gravel, and other impurities settled before the cleaner water flowed into the main reservoir.

Structural Resilience

He added that the tiered interior served not only a functional purpose but also a structural one by distributing the pressure of water and surrounding soil across multiple levels, significantly enhancing the resilience and longevity of these structures.
