Sir Syed University Celebrates 29th Convocation with Grand Ceremony
KARACHI - The Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology (SSUET) hosted its 29th Convocation on Thursday night, a landmark event that celebrated the academic achievements of more than 1,095 graduates from Bachelor of Science (BS) and Master of Science (MS) programs. The ceremony, held in a prestigious setting, marked a pivotal moment in the educational journeys of these students, who have completed their rigorous studies in various engineering and technology disciplines.
Recognition and Awards for Top Performers
During the convocation, position holders were honored with gold, silver, and bronze medals for securing the highest marks in their respective fields. In a generous gesture, the Zakir Ali Khan Foundation provided either a laptop or a cash prize of Rs 50,000 to students who achieved first position, further incentivizing academic excellence and supporting their future endeavors.
Governor Sindh's Inspirational Address
The event was graced by the Governor of Sindh, Kamran Khan Tessori, who served as the Chief Guest. In his address, Governor Tessori articulated the true purpose of education, stating that it should guide individuals toward truth and righteousness rather than integrating them into corrupt systems. He emphasized that this is the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Pakistan must leverage modern technology to achieve progress and development.
Governor Tessori highlighted a critical issue, noting that Karachi contributes 65 percent of the country's revenue yet remains deprived of basic facilities, a situation he described as a matter of serious concern. He praised Sir Syed Ahmed Khan as a great visionary who founded Aligarh University, underscoring the belief that progress is impossible without education and skills. He also commended the historic role played by Aligarh University students in the Pakistan Movement.
Initiatives for IT Education and Inclusion
Governor Kamran Khan Tessori informed the audience about the Governor Initiative, under which approximately 50,000 children are receiving free IT education, with an expenditure of up to PKR 900,000 per student. He further announced that students of Sir Syed University would be included in these free IT courses, expanding access to technological training and fostering skill development among the youth.
Leadership Perspectives on Education and Growth
Chancellor SSUET, Muhammad Akbar Ali Khan, extended heartfelt congratulations to the graduates, emphasizing the importance of this transition into a new phase filled with challenges and opportunities. He highlighted the evolving global economy, remarking, "Knowledge has now displaced physical capital as the primary source of wealth," and stressed the necessity of technology-based education for national competitiveness and social development.
Minister of Boards and Universities, Ismail Raho, acknowledged the vital role played by Sir Syed University in developing a skilled and highly qualified youth, which he stated would strengthen Pakistan's defence capabilities and contribute to national security.
University Progress and Achievements
Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Afzal Haq presented a comprehensive progress report, detailing that the university awarded 1,032 Bachelor degrees and 63 Master degrees, including 6 PhDs. This reflects the institution's growth to 34 academic programs and over 8,000 students, supported by a dedicated faculty. He noted the introduction of 7 new technologies this year, showcasing the university's commitment to innovation.
Dr. Haq pointed out that Sir Syed University excels both nationally and globally, with a vibrant research culture and significant financial support for 1,500 deserving students, awarding over 5 crore rupees in scholarships. In the current admission season, the university enrolled around 2,500 students, demonstrating a strong demand for quality education. Registrar Syed Sarfraz Ali also spoke on the occasion, reinforcing the university's achievements and future goals.
