Punjab Chief Minister Greenlights Ambitious Skill City and Educational Reforms

In a landmark decision aimed at transforming the educational landscape, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has granted in-principle approval for the establishment of the province's first-ever Skill City. This initiative is part of a comprehensive push to introduce market-oriented technical education at the matriculation level, designed to equip young people with practical, job-ready skills.

Special Meeting on "Matric Tech" and Skills Development

Chairing a special meeting focused on "Matric Tech" and school-based skills development, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz directed authorities to expedite the presentation of detailed plans for the Skill City. The proposed project will serve as a hub for industry-aligned technical institutes, while existing vocational institutions across Punjab will be upgraded into Centres of Excellence to enhance their quality and output.

The meeting also reached a consensus to affiliate the province's Technical and Vocational Education Board with institutions in Scotland and the United Kingdom. This strategic partnership is expected to significantly improve the quality and global recognition of technical training offered in Punjab, ensuring that certifications are valued both locally and internationally.

Comprehensive Curriculum and Workforce Readiness

Under the proposed reforms, students will receive practical, job-oriented training alongside their formal education. This dual approach is designed to enable them to enter the workforce immediately after matriculation, reducing unemployment and fostering economic growth. The curriculum will cover a diverse range of fields, including:

  • Graphic design and media production
  • Fashion design and data coding
  • Tourism and industrial electrical work
  • Plumbing and solar systems installation
  • Professional cooking and allied health sciences

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized the importance of hiring highly qualified instructors and developing curricula in consultation with industry experts. This collaboration will ensure that the training programs remain relevant to current market needs, bridging the gap between education and employment.

Vision for Youth Empowerment and Economic Development

In her remarks, the Chief Minister outlined a clear vision for the future, stating that the government aims to equip every young person in Punjab with employable skills. She affirmed that all available resources would be utilized to transform the province's youth into a productive and competitive workforce, capable of driving economic development and innovation.

This initiative represents a significant step towards addressing skill shortages and enhancing the employability of Punjab's youth, positioning the province as a leader in technical and vocational education reform.
