Actor and producer Fahad Mustafa has called on the Punjab government to review and extend the operating hours for cinemas and shopping malls, arguing that current restrictions are harming the film industry and reducing audience attendance. In a letter addressed to Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, which he shared on his Instagram account, Mustafa highlighted that most cinemas are located within shopping malls and are thus directly affected by the government's early closing policy, introduced as part of austerity measures.
Impact on Film Business
Mustafa noted that the restricted timings are hurting the box office performance of newly released films, which rely heavily on strong initial footfall. He argued that a modest extension in operating hours could boost ticket sales, enhance cinema revenues, and support employment in the entertainment and hospitality sectors. The actor emphasized that extended hours would also offer greater convenience to audiences, many of whom can only attend screenings later in the evening due to their daily routines.
Appeal to Authorities
“The early closure is affecting recently released films that are relying on this period to reach audiences,” Mustafa wrote in his appeal. He acknowledged the Punjab government’s support for the local film industry, including initiatives such as Film City, describing these steps as encouraging for filmmakers and industry stakeholders. He requested the authorities to consider a limited relaxation in operating hours, stating that it would be welcomed by filmmakers, cinema operators, and audiences alike.
Mustafa's plea comes amid ongoing efforts to revive the Pakistani film industry, which has faced challenges from competition with international releases and changing viewer habits. The actor's appeal highlights the delicate balance between government austerity measures and the need to support cultural and economic activities.
