A French national was arrested on Wednesday after allegedly crashing a car into a historic fountain in Sydney's Hyde Park, with police reporting that he was still eating his McDonald's meal when they arrived at the scene.

Incident Details

The 21-year-old man reversed an SUV into the Archibald Fountain in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The driver was found consuming his McDonald's order, which Lessing noted as 'strangely, he was still eating Macca's there.'

Legal Consequences

The man was charged with negligent driving. He claimed he was delivering a food order at the time of the crash. The damage to the fountain is estimated at least $10,700 (A$15,000). The driver was uninjured in the incident.

Police images showed the car's rear wheels lodged in the fountain's pool, with the rest of the vehicle resting on the stone sidewall. Authorities did not disclose the specifics of the man's McDonald's order. The incident has drawn attention due to the ironic combination of a Frenchman, known for their culinary heritage, eating fast food during a crash into a heritage site.
